Others are rapidly gaining a world wide reputation for innovative design coupled with superb quality of construction – Sergio Fahrer has had no less than six pieces short listed for the IF awards in the last two years and you will frequently find his pieces featured in idFX and Elle Interiors together with those of Isay Weinfeld and Etel Carmona.

The roots of modern Brazilian design go back to the middle of the twentieth century when Oscar Niemeyer was helping to shape the building of that ultra modern city Brasilia and Lucio Costa was designing buildings influenced by Le Corbusier.

Their style demanded a different kind of furniture which encouraged the first wave of radical new designers producing a very modern but distinctively Brazilian style – amongst them Sergio Rodrigues, Carlos Motta and Gregori Warchavchik.

The first school of industrial design in Latin America - Rio de Janeiro School of Industrial Design – was established. This became to furniture what the bossa nova was to music and Pele was to football.

But in the 50’s Brazilian designers were focused on providing a domestic alternative to imported goods. Now this second wave of designers is reaching out to export Brazilian design to the rest of the world. They have already made an impact in North America, continental Europe and Japan: we are proud to be the first to introduce them to the UK .
